Terraria is a 2D action-adventure sandbox video game released in 2011. It has gained popularity for its mechanics that allow for many possibilities, as well as being easy to pick up and play. One popular feature of the game is the ability to favorite items.
In Terraria, your inventory can get quite crowded, especially if you’re playing the game with friends. If you want to make sure that you always have easy access to the items that are most important to you, then you’ll want to learn how to favorite items. This allows players to easily find the items they need while playing.
So why would we want to favorite items? Because we can! It’s a great way to save what you use most and build up a collection of tools for all occasions. This changes slightly in Multiplayer where everyone can access your favorites (thanks rubenwardy for pointing this out).
However, consider only favorite items that pertain to yourself or give them all away; one thing not missing from our own inventory is the Bundle of Fireworks. We also suggest equipping weapons and armor that you like instead of favoring them because they aren’t easy to retrieve when you’re in the heat of battle.
While many of these items are necessary for your survival, others can be classified asfavorite Items. What makes an item a favorite? There is no clear-cut answer, but generally speaking, favorite items are those that you enjoy using the most or hold sentimental value. In this guide, we will show you how to favorite Items in Terraria so you can easily access them whenever you need them.

Terraria Favorite Items | Xbox, PC, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch
As you play through Terraria, you’ll come across a number of useful items that are helpful when fending off enemies or surviving in difficult situations. As mentioned earlier, it can be difficult to manage your inventory if you’re playing with friends.
If the item that you want is buried underneath dozens of other items, then it could take some time before you find what you’re looking for. With how quickly things move in this game, even a few seconds can make all the difference between life and death.
It’s best to keep your equipment slots free for new things, but if you prefer an item and put it into your equipment slots, then take it out of your inventory again, the favorite status will be lost and you’ll have to Alt. click it one more time. & Read More on Is Terraria Cross-Platform in 2022?
Console Controls: D-Pad Hotbar Navigation
On the Xbox version you can use the D-Pad to quickly navigate through your hotbar. On the Nintendo Switch, there is no way to favorite or remove items from your inventory when in handheld mode (just make sure you don’t drop anything). If you’d like, you can take a screenshot and look at your inventory that way.
Just open it up and move items around with “A” and “B” buttons; note that having too many items will cause them to stack vertically instead of horizontally. You can also get rid of backpacks by pressing Left or Right Trigger while hovering over it (Xbox), holding down L or ZL (Nintendo Switch), or tapping Y (PlayStation 4) . The last one is useful if you accidentally pick it up, but don’t want to use it.
Nintendo Switch: Radial Hotbar Navigation
The Nintendo Switch version has an interesting take on managing items. Instead of using the D-Pad to switch between four hotbar slots, players can use the joystick or their finger to swipe over the screen and activate any item in their immediate vicinity. You can edit your hotbar by tapping R. If you press Y, you will open up a menu where you can see each item’s stats as well as remove them from your inventory if they are not favorited.
Touch controls allow players to pick up an item without having to hover over it with crosshairs. This makes it easy for players who are dealing with multiple things at once because there is no need to stop moving just because you want to check out what that mystery potion does. Also, this might help with intense situations where you don’t want to stop and use the D-Pad.

How To Favorite Items In Terraria?
It’s also important to keep in mind that there are certain items that are permanently bound to your character. These “bound” items will always be accessible no matter how much space is available in your inventory.
This includes your pickaxe, sword, and various types of clothing. These items are necessary for survival but will take up quite a bit of room in your inventory, especially if you’re playing with friends.
Knowing this, it’s important to know how to favorite items in Terraria so that you can quickly access the ones that you care about most. Fortunately, this is super easy to do! Just follow the steps below to learn exactly how it’s done.
Steps To Follow:
1) While playing Terraria on your PC or console game system (Xbox One or PlayStation 4), bring up the menu by pressing the ESC key/button twice. Alternatively, you can also pause the game by bringing up your ‘inventory’ menu. This will allow you to pause the game and access your inventory without having to return to a safe location in the overworld.
2) Once paused, open up your inventory menu by pressing [I] or [E]. If you have multiple tabs in this menu, press [E] again to bring up the second tab. In order to favorite an item in Terraria, we will be using our cursor on PC/console game systems (Xbox One/PlayStation 4). However, even if you play on mobile device, it’s still possible for you to favorite items. The only difference is that instead of using your cursor, you’ll need to use the tap-and-hold method for tapping on items.
3) While looking at the ‘favorites’ tab, click and drag the item that you would like to favorite into the empty space right above the line dividing ‘favorites’ and ‘all items.’ Once you’ve successfully highlighted your chosen item, press [Right Mouse Button]/press [X] on Xbox One/press [Square] on PlayStation 4. This will move it over so that it’s now in its own separate category.
4) You’ve now successfully moved an item to a separate “favorite” category! If you’d like to remove an item from this category, just click and drag it out of its own section onto any other section in the favorites tab. Alternatively, if the name of this chosen item is currently displayed within your inventory window then you can press [X]/press [Square] to remove it.
Another way to favorite an item is by pressing the 1-9 keys on your keyboard using traditional controls or using Left Control + Number for Xbox 360 controllers. In the latest update, there is no indication that an item has been favorited by your controller, but it is working in the background and will be indicated when you return to your Inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to favorite items in Terraria if I use a controller? I can’t see any way of doing so?
You have to favorite an item from the inventory window. Press ‘i’ or tab, go over all the tabs until you find your favorite’s tab (it’s #3), highlight the item you want to favorite. For some reason it doesn’t appear at first but after exiting and re-entering (or logging out and back in) it will show up as a star icon beside it like normal.
If I switch to mobile, can I still favorite items without having to tap-and-hold on each one individually?
Absolutely! Favoriting items is actually easier on mobile devices because instead of using the cursor to click and hold on items, you can favorite items simply by tapping-and-holding on them. As soon as you tap-and-hold an item for a couple seconds, it should automatically be added to your list of favorites! If not, try repeating the process until it works correctly.
Do I have to favorite all my items manually? Can I use this feature to move items between different characters?
You do not have to enter each individual item into your list of favorites. It’s much better to just click ‘favorites’ when needed so that you can much more quickly access any particular item in Terraria.
However if you’d like items for all of your characters, you can do this by using the “transfer” feature to move items from one character to another. To do so, go into any character’s inventory > favorite’s tab > select item(s) that you’d like to transfer > press the same button/key combination from before that you used to toggle favorites on or off
Is there still a limit to how much I can favorite?
No, you no longer have to worry about your favorites categories filling up. You can now favorite as many items as you’d like!
Why is it only possible to favorite one item at a time? A) As of right now, this is something that we are unable to change. We will be sure to update this guide if things change in the future! If you want more Terraria action then check out our Top 5 Terraria Tips & Tricks list.
The idea of this article is to allow you to favorite items that you use on a daily or weekly basis, so you always have them on hand. This is especially useful for healing potions, your go-to drills (like the Picksaw), and other less time-sensitive items like Depth Meter. It’s important to note that not all item categories can be favorited, so you’ll have to figure out what works best for you.
